As much as you love spending time with your furry friend, there will likely come a time when you need to arrange alternate care for your beloved pooch. Dog day care centers can provide temporary care when you need it most, enabling you to get through your busy day without having to worry about your pup being left alone at home.

If it is your first time using dog day care, it's a good idea to help your dog prepare for this new experience. Even if your dog has been going to day care for as long as you can remember, you can still utilize these tips to help ensure every trip is an enjoyable one.

Visit the Facility Before the Big Day

It's always a good idea to give your dog a chance to get familiar with the dog day care center before you leave them there for the day. Your dog may experience stress or anxiety if left in an unfamiliar place, so taking them for a visit in advance can soothe any worries. Rather than making your appointment over the phone, take the time to stop by the facility in-person with your dog so that they can get used to the sights, sounds and smells.

Keep a Positive Demeanor

Your dog picks up signals from you, so if you are stressed out about dog day care, they likely will be as well. If, on the other hand, you approach the experience with excitement and a positive attitude, your dog will begin to reflect that mood as well. Getting your dog into a happy, relaxed state of mind before drop-off can go a long way toward ensuring a positive experience.

Start with Short Visits

Before you leave your dog at day care for an entire day, it is a smart strategy to start with a few shorter stays so you can gauge your pet's reaction. Once they are confident that you are going to return and aren't planning on leaving them there for good, they'll be equipped to handle longer and longer stays.

Choose the Right Dog Day Care

The facility you choose can have as much influence over your dog's overall experience as the preparation you do beforehand. Because your pup will be spending a fair bit of time there, it is important to choose a facility that will best meet your pet's needs. For example, some facilities keep all of the dogs separate, while others allow them to play together. Some let you bring your dog's favorite toys, while others do not. Be sure to evaluate several facilities to find the one that best meets your and your dog's needs.
